The Carthage Music Department creates challenging, humanizing, transforming, and enriching opportunities that advance musical excellence and foster lifelong musical engagement.

An audition before members of the music faculty is required for entrance into the music major. At the end of their sophomore year, all music majors are evaluated for junior standing. They must show they have fulfilled repertoire requirements in their performance area through the sophomore year, and they must satisfactorily perform 15-20 minutes of music from that list.

If this junior-standing jury is insufficient in either repertoire or performance, the faculty may admit the student provisionally to junior standing in the major, or advise the student to discontinue the music major.

Bachelor of Arts in Music

For students who want to seek further depth and skills development, Carthage offers emphases in instrumental and vocal performance, piano pedagogy, and music composition. Additionally, Carthage offers a major in music education and an interdisciplinary major in musical theatre.

Emphasis in Performance (Vocal or Instrumental)

Students majoring in music can choose to select an emphasis in vocal performance. They can choose from vocal or instrumental performance.

Emphasis in Vocal Performance (16 credits)

Students majoring in Piano Performance and Collaborative Piano will also be required to take 12 credits of additional music electives. These may be chosen from literature courses, courses designed for voice or instrumental principals, and other department offerings.

Major in Music Education

Carthage offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Education (BMME) with certifications in instrumental music education and vocal music education.

The BMME meets Wisconsin licensure requirements as well as the standards set forth by the National Association of Schools of Music. Please note: the completion of the BMME program does not guarantee licensure. State requirements (i.e., student teaching, content tests and other assessments, criminal background checks, etc.) must be met in addition to the completion of the curricular components of the program. Together with their advisor, students pursuing the BMME must plan their program with care in order to meet both the requirements for graduation and the requirements for a teaching license.

In addition to the Carthage General Education requirements (48 credits), the BMME program has four components that must be completed:

a Concentration area — either Instrumental or Vocal Music Education (14 credits)
and Professional Education (20 credits)

BMME students must earn a C or better in all MUS coursework and are exempt from the 74 credits outside the department that are typically required for graduation.

BMME students must be accepted into the Teacher Education Program in order to take any Core Music Education, Concentration, or Professional Education courses above the 2000 level.

Applied Music Lessons

The Music Department offers private and class instruction in applied music to music majors and minors, and within limitations of staff, to non-music majors.

Music majors must take their applied music lessons within the Music Department unless the department approves an exception. Outstanding students, normally music majors completing an emphasis in performance, may elect two private lessons per week in one applied area.

Applied lessons are included in every music major’s tuition. Music education students are encouraged to take multiple applied lessons to garner extra skills across instruments. Additional fees may apply.

Four private applied lessons in a single area, or one class lesson and three private applied lessons in a single area may count as a course for the fine arts distribution requirement.

Recital and Performance Requirements

Applied lesson music students have opportunities to participate in regular recitals (Brown Bag Concert Series), which feature music students from every area, and within each instructor’s studio class.

The department believes these recitals are important in broadening students’ experience with live music and in expanding their knowledge of solo literature and requires all who study applied music to attend them.

Students in the performance emphases must perform in the studio and departmental recitals and must present two satisfactory solo recitals. Normally, they give a half-hour recital in the junior year and a full-hour recital in the senior year. Students in the music education emphasis give one-half recital in the junior or senior year. All recitals are presented only with permission of the music faculty, following a pre-recital jury. In order to satisfy the recital requirements of each emphasis, recitals must include an interesting and representative program and demonstrate a high level of performing competency.
